CHERYL SAWYER

A special day for the Maréchaussée

When you consider the historic reality, it was always a special day for anyone in danger on or near the highroads of 18th-century France when the Maréchaussée hove into view. They were the nation's gendarmes, the military police force who reported directly to the Marshals of France, and in the gentle countryside of the Champagne they patrolled the highways to protect travellers, farmers, peasants and the rural poor from robbers, highwaymen, armed beggars and anyone intent on violent mischief against the populace.

And yes, today is a special day for me, because Victor Constant stars in a new investigation, Death in Champagne. Thanks to Sapere Books, it appears on your virtual bookshelves for the very first time! Buy it here on Amazon.
